Naval battles from the First and Second World War make up the signature feature of the work of the Hannover painter and journalist Asmus Petersen (born 1928). ‘The depiction of war requires abstraction,’ is Petersen’s artistic creed. Consequently he condenses movement diagrams with radio messages, position information and time designations into abstract conceptual pictures.
Asmus Petersen initially studies economics before turning to art and writing in the late 1960s. In Hannover, Petersen himself with his studio in the Waterworks where he worked from 1970 to 2016 became an institution and attraction.
On the occasion of the 90th birthday of the Hannover artist and journalist en Asmus Petersen, the Sprengel Museum Hannover is presenting a selection of his battle painting in the so-called Einblickshalle.
