Olav Christopher Jenssen’s pictorial compositions of the last ten years perpetuate the themes of non-representational art and Art Informel. They are concerned with the interaction of colour, line and surface and ultimately with the effect of materials such as charcoal, paint and wire. The creative spectrum extends from expressive gestural meshes and layerings of lines, and cellular structures to colour field painting and comprises (charcoal) drawings and sculpture in addition to painting.
The exhibition title Estragon (Tarragon) can be interpreted as a metaphor for various associative fields. This herb is a direct reference to nature, opens the senses for smells and flavours and not least also the sense of colour. In the end, it is a question of painting’s capacity for activating these senses and opening a perceptual space that becomes more open the less the picture resorts to narrative or illustration.
This exhibition accompanies a new volume in the publication series “Kunst der Gegenwart aus Niedersachsen” (Contemporary Art from Lower Saxony) on Olav Christopher Jenssen, issued by the Stiftung Niedersachsen.
