The guardians of German art collections are again in again in a state of alarm since the case of Wolfgang Beltracchi. Almost every collection contains works that for varying reasons have been forged, copied, recast or reprinted. Art historically, such well-covered cases as Beltracchi’s are the least interesting. This can also be demonstrated by examples from the Sprengel Museum Hannover that have mistakenly been exhibited over the decades as questionable originals.

Works by such prominent artists as Giorgio de Chirico, Alberto Giacometti, Oskar Kokoschka, Max Beckmann and Wols that in the meanwhile have proven to be replicas, forgeries and copies will be exhibited in the third cabinet-like gallery in the extension. They will be accompanied by original works by the same artists in addition to information on the current state of research on each ‘case’, which has been the result of decades-long collaboration with scholars, the compiling of catalogue raisonnés, conservation measures and provenance research. Discussions concerning potential forgeries, the outcomes of which are still open, will also be presented.

The presentation, finally, will be rhetorically underscored by the work of Dirk Dietrich Hennig (born 1967), who deals with such themes as original, history and forgery.

With this presentation from the collection, the Sprengel Museum Hannover is continuing with its endeavours to make the works of the institution more open and transparent – not only the classic aspects of presenting, collecting and preserving but also the disclosure of the museum’s scholarly strategy.

The show with be accompanied by a pamphlet (Ger./Eng.) featuring texts by Patricia Hartmann und Carina Plath as well as a programme of lectures and discussions.
